How to get great referrals to refer

Now that you’re armed with the strategy of what the best referrers on our platform do, it’s time to get practical and start referring! To help you with sourcing great candidates, we’ve put together a list of potential ways to find them but remember - this isn’t an exhaustive list, feel free to get creative and try other approaches.

Your Network

This is ideally the first place you should search. These are the people you can most likely vouch for and vet easily. They are your friends, old classmates, former colleagues, etc. These are people within your circle that are high-quality talent and match the requirements for the job.

Social media

When you have exhausted your network, you can extend your search to a wider audience. LinkedIn is a great platform to use for your search.
If you would like to publish the job opening on your social media accounts, it is important that you follow these guidelines
Don’t share any information about the company that will make it easy to find, eg company name.
Don’t share the remuneration
Do vet each person that comes in through this medium to ensure you are only referring candidates that are the best fit for the role.
💡
Sample:
Job alert! A Fintech startup is looking to hire a Product Manager to join their team. If you have 3+ years of experience working in the Fintech space, live in Kenya and have an In-depth understanding of the software development process, including design patterns and software development methodologies, this role could be perfect for you! If you’re interested, send me a direct message or leave a comment with “interested” and I’ll be in touch with details on how to proceed.

Mailing list

If you have a mailing list, this could be a good avenue to expand your reach and find more quality candidates to refer. Bear in mind to follow the same guidelines as social media.

Events

Attending events and networking in person is another great way to increase your pool of great candidates. It could be industry-relevant events or networking events, the trick is to keep it in mind as you interact, this will make it easier for you to recognize great talent and onboard them!

Communities you belong to

If you belong to professional communities, this is also a great place to find talent. You can share the jobs with them and get people who are a great fit to refer.

Leverage recruiting tools

There are great tools that could help you easily find great talent to refer. Here are some to consider.
Reminder: Even if there is no role available that immediately fits a great candidate you have found, you can refer them as general referrals and they will be matched to a fitting role when it becomes available. You will be recognized as the referrer.
