The Research Assistant will work in greenhouse and field settings, supporting the development of microbial products.

Description

Pluton Biosciences is an AgTech startup working to to develop microbial based products to provide farmers with alternatives to synthetic fertilizers. We are looking for a part-time Research Assistant to work with our team at a greenhouse & field site near Columbia, MO. The research is focused on developing microbial products capable of fixing nitrogen and capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to enrich agricultural soils while helping to mitigate climate change. The Research Assistant (RA) will assist the Project Lead in the following duties:

1. Testing microorganisms and plants under different conditions in a greenhouse setting. This will require preparation of soil, potting soil, planting/inoculations, watering and monitoring the progress of an experiment using multiple analytical methods and sampling techniques.

3. Working with the team to design and execute field trials, including field layout, randomization, field preparation, inoculations, and taking multiple samples during the experiments. Field work will occur in spring, summer and fall months.

4. In some cases, field work may involve setting up custom irrigation or camera systems.

5. Make contributions to experimental procedures, analyses, and design in both the greenhouse and field.

6. Operation of laboratory and greenhouse equipment, including environmental monitoring/adjustments, irrigation systems, lighting/light monitors, balances, etc.

8. Communicate with the project lead and team members regarding the status of the experiments, including attendance at remote and potentially in-person meetings.

9. Work independently while also collaborating with a remote team.

10. Observe safety and regulatory procedures and maintaining a safe work environment.

11. Interact in a positive manner with other researchers and managers and maintaining an inclusive work environment.

11. Accurately record (via electronic notebook) and present research results.

Required Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, other biological sciences, or a related field.

2. 2+ years of laboratory, greenhouse and/or field work experience desired.

3. Reliability and a strong work ethic.

4. Ability to work a predefined schedule of 15-20 hours per week with and without direct supervision.

5. A basic understanding of microbiology, soil science and greenhouse, field and laboratory techniques.

6. Ability to use a word processor, spreadsheets, and presentation software.

Desired Qualifications:

1. Greenhouse, growth chamber and horticultural experience a plus.

Salary

$18 - $20 per hour
