Pluton is looking for a Research Associate that will contribute to laboratory, greenhouse, and fieldwork efforts, supporting the development and testing of innovative microbial products to enhance soil health and promote sustainable agriculture.

Pluton Biosciences is an Ag Tech startup working to help combat climate change through innovation in agriculture. We are looking for a part-time Research Intern to work with our team at our greenhouse & field sites in Missouri. The internship will run from May-September of 2025. This team is focused on developing a diverse collection of microbial products capable of capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while enriching agricultural soils. The Research Intern (RI) will assist with the following duties:

  1. Culturing and testing of microorganisms in a lab, greenhouse and/or field setting.
  2. Assist in setting up experiments in lab, greenhouse and/or field setting.
  3. Collection of samples from experiments and preparation for sequencing and other analyses.
  4. Making various types of media for use in these experiments.
  5. Operation of laboratory and greenhouse equipment, including growth chambers, bioreactors, lighting systems, imaging equipment, pipettes, microscope, balances, etc.
  6. Ability to work independently while also collaborating with a team.
  7. Observing safety and regulatory procedures and maintaining a safe work environment.
  8. Interact positively with other researchers and managers while maintaining an inclusive and positive work environment.
  9. Accurate record keeping and presentation of research results.
  10. Consistent field work, field observations and sampling during summer/fall months.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree (or current undergraduate student) in microbiology, other biological sciences, or a related field.
  2. Laboratory class and/or work experience desired.
  3. Reliability and a strong work ethic.
  4. Ability and willingness to work a predefined schedule of 40 hours per week in a lab, greenhouse and/or field environment, including travel to greenhouse and field locations with the potential for overnight stay.
  5. A basic and demonstrable understanding of microbiological and laboratory techniques.
  6. Ability to use a word processor, spreadsheets, and presentation software.
