About Renoster:

Renoster uses cutting-edge GIS technology to independently monitor the impact of forest carbon projects world-wide. Our small team is primarily based in North America and includes graduates from the forestry schools at the University of Maine, Oregon State University, and the University of British Columbia. Our next goal is to apply our technology to make forest carbon markets accessible and transparent to small landowners in North America. While existing forest carbon programs emphasize drastic reductions in harvesting on commercial forestland, Renoster wants to create the first forest carbon credits that support wholistic forest management for high-value wood products on non-commercial lands, and therefore benefit rural economies.

Timeline: July - October (with potential for extension)

Goal 1: Assist Renoster staff in collecting feedback from forest industry stakeholders on a web-based forest carbon management platform, while attending public events at which Renoster is a sponsor

Goal 2: Identify landowners interested in forest carbon program participation and assist them with enrollment

Requirements:

• Ability to travel to events throughout central, western, and mid-coast Maine
• Ability to work weekends
• Ability to set-up and staff a booth at day-long events
• Ability to describe the importance of forestry concepts and decision-making to landowners, especially the impact of management decisions on nutrient cycling, forest resilience, and regeneration potential
  • The candidate is NOT expected to be an expert in these very technical areas, but should be able to describe at a high level that different forest management strategies can result in different outcomes for nutrient cycling, resilience, and regeneration potential. Preferably in plain language that doesn’t rely too heavily on science jargon.
• Ability to demonstrate the use of a web-based tool for managing and using forest data
• Willingness to learn about new forest product markets

Ideal Qualifications

• Significant experience in forest industry OR graduate student in forestry (advanced undergraduates welcome to apply)
• Experience using GIS in natural resources management a major plus
• Experience representing organizations at public events a plus
• Familiarity with forest carbon cycling, forest carbon credits, and trade-offs in management for long-term forest carbon storage a plus

Responsibilities:

• Engage landowners and other forest industry stakeholders at events throughout Maine

    • August 8 - 10, Forest Heritage Days at Moosehead Lake (Greenville, with Renoster team)
    • September 7, Maine Woodland Owners/ Maine TREE Foundation Forestry Field Day (Old Town, on own)
    • September 30, Woodland Owners’ Appreciation Day (Casco (Sebago Lake State Park), with Renoster team)
• Set up and staff vendor booth for duration of event, with appropriate breaks

Compensation: $600 per event, 5 events total, with potential to add events if mutually agreed-upon

• Fuel/ charging expenses, meals, and overnight stays will be covered by Renoster separate from pay
• Per-event pay includes time outside of event training with Renoster team. Training with Renoster team will not exceed an average of an hour per week
• Note potential to swim, hike, camp out, and network after events close for the day
