UtilityAPI is building the next generation of data infrastructure systems to power the clean energy revolution. Energy data is critical for the development and deployment of renewable energy systems, but is complex to obtain and interpret. UtilityAPI has extensive experience building systems that provide this data to enable renewable energy companies, and we are looking for an experienced Staff Software Engineer that wants to help us architect, build, and deploy a new generation of products to accelerate the clean energy industry.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will work deeply in the code that powers our integration with utilities, helping to build a scalable system that can be deployed quickly and reliably. These integrations are complex but core to our business and mission, and require detailed engineering work and creativity. The Staff Software Engineer in this area will have an opportunity, along with the rest of the engineering team, to define the architecture and code structures that will enable us to support increasing numbers of utilities over time. UtilityAPI has a unique opportunity to be a primary provider of these services and is working hard to build the team that will get us there.

We have been fully remote since 2019 and provide flexible working hours. We are mission-driven and prioritize work in service of the renewable energy transition as well as in service to our teammates. We believe that empathy, combined with excellence, leads to a highly effective team.

Our stack consists of Python, Django, and Javascript, running on Nginx, Postgres, and Redis, hosted on AWS. We manage work using Jira and Github, and communicate using Slack.

What you’ll do:

  • Scope, build, deploy, and test core features for our utility integrations projects using Django, Python, and Javascript, including breaking up large initiatives into small pieces that can be effectively parallelized and implemented by the engineering team.
  • Provide architectural recommendations and implementation plans to increase the scalability of the platform.
  • Mentor and guide other engineers to improve their skills and improve the platform through pair coding, code reviews, and leading by example.
  • Participate in agile ceremonies and provide input on prioritization and technical plans.
  • Work with the Principal Engineering team to align team projects with the goals of the overall engineering organization.
  • Provide feedback on the SDLC and other processes.

Your experience:

  • 7+ years of experience in back end software development, ideally in Python
  • Experience with asynchronous job processing systems and event-driven architectures
  • Experience with medium to large projects and breaking down those projects into smaller, actionable tasks
  • Experience making proactive recommendations about a code base or software product, and making a business case for those recommendations
  • Experience working with relational databases
  • Nice to have: experience of any kind in the renewable energy industry
  • Nice to have: experience with web scraping
