The Role:

The Food Safety Supervisor will oversee food safety program implementation and ensure compliance with good manufacturing practice and food safety standards across food production to include fermentation and food manufacturing. This role involves supervision of the quality team, implementing food safety and quality programs and procedures, while working closely with both fermentation and food production teams to drive continuous improvement in both food safety and quality. The Food Safety Supervisor plays a critical role in driving improvement to key performance initiatives and mitigating food and safety risks within the production environment.

Responsibilities:

  • • Supervise the quality assurance team, providing coaching, training, guidance, and performance management.
    • Develop and implement continuous improvement programs to meet and exceed company key performance indicators for yield improvement while maintaining product safety and quality.
    • Monitor daily production processes including preventive controls (cooking and metal detection to ensure compliance to the facility food safety plan.
    • Manage the internal facility audits program and drive continuous improvement to good manufacturing practices (GMP) compliance across both fermentation and food production.
    • Investigate product non-conformities, including external customer complaints and implement corrective and preventive measures in conjunction with the fermentation and food production teams.
    • Implement and maintain a robust environmental monitoring program focused on “seek and destroy” methods to mitigate food safety risks to finished product. Work closely with the quality and sanitation teams to mitigate risk of pathogen entry and persistence in the environment.
    • Collaborate with the sanitation team to validate and verify cleaning and sanitation effectiveness across both fermentation and food production. Work with the sanitation supervisor to develop and implement SSOPs within the production facility.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including fermentation, food production, laboratory, maintenance, and supply chain, to resolve food safety and quality-related non-conformances and drive process improvements.
    • Develop food safety training methods that demonstrate the “why” of food safety and quality practices. Deliver training using a variety of methods: in-person, one point lessons, online, on the job, etc.
    • Work directly with the Quality Manager to manage the finished product sensory program used for product release.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in food science, microbiology, or a related field, or equivalent years of food safety and quality work experience in a food manufacturing environment.
  • 3+ years of experience in quality assurance or quality control within the food industry, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
  • Strong understanding and experience in executing environmental monitoring programs in a food manufacturing environment.
  • Experience working with sanitation teams to validate and verify effectiveness of facility and equipment hygiene.
  • Strong understanding of food safety regulations, GMPs, HACCP, and quality management systems (e.g., SQF, BRC).
  • Experience with a variety of microbiological testing methods, and auditing procedures in a manufacturing environment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced setting.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with quality management software such as Red Zone, Neogen EMP, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certifications such as PCQI, HACCP, SQF Practitioner, or other food safety/quality credentials are preferred.
  • Experience with fermentation, plant-based or alternative protein manufacturing.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to work in a manufacturing environment with varying temperatures.
  • Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 pounds as needed.
  • Flexibility to work different shifts, including weekends and holidays, as required.

Compensation:
The base salary range for this role is $70,000 - $93,000 annually, which is just one aspect of our total compensation package. In addition to the salary, this position is eligible for a potential annual bonus and equity! Actual compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.
